Land Acknowledgment

The land that Vanderbilt University is located on in Nashville, TN is the traditional territory of the Cherokee Nation, as well as the Shawnee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Creek peoples. The Trail of Tears was one of the routes by which the people of the Cherokee Nation were forcibly moved west in 1838. The Trail of Tears passed through Nashville, TN. The University resides on land ceded in the Treaty of Hopewell (1795-96).
